Grave Mercy was more of a political intrigue, Dark Triumph an Adventure and now Mortal Heart is more of a Fantasy and love story。 This book is far more invested into the lore of the gods, Mortain in particular, but the other Nine as well and their increasingly changing roles with the influx of the Christianity。 This story is heavier on romance, as well as slower at parts but I still really loved it。Mortal Heart is Annith's story。 We know her from the previous books, as she is friend and sister t Grave Mercy was more of a political intrigue, Dark Triumph an Adventure and now Mortal Heart is more of a Fantasy and love story。 This book is far more invested into the lore of the gods, Mortain in particular, but the other Nine as well and their increasingly changing roles with the influx of the Christianity。 This story is heavier on romance, as well as slower at parts but I still really loved it。Mortal Heart is Annith's story。 We know her from the previous books, as she is friend and sister to Ismae and Sybella。 Unlike the other girls, Annith has spent her life in the convent since birth。 Annith has been waiting and longing for years to be sent out on an assignment, like her sisters before her。 One day while spying on the Reverend Mother, Annith discovers that she is not meant to leave the convent, but to stay forever and be the next Seeress。 Finding this a horrible fate, Annith strikes out on her own after the Reverend Mother to demand answers as to her fate。 I liked the addition of the helliquin and Balthazaar to the series; he was a very interesting and mysterious character and remained so throughout the entire book。 I also liked the resolution of the Duchess's struggles。 After 3 books of trying to find a solution I believe the author found a very inventive and creative end to her story。 Overall a series I can see myself re-reading in the future。。。。which is rare for me to do。 。。。more

"I do not understand you。 Sometimes I cannot tell if you hate me of wish to devour me。""Both," he whispers, and I can feel the heat of him draw closer。You may be asking yourself: "Livia, why on earth did you prefer this couple to the two previous ones?"And yes, I am aware that Beast and Sybella are pretty popular amongst His Fair Assassin readers, and I like them just fine。 But Annith and Balthazaar。 ANNITH AND BALTHAZAAR。They got the steam。 That's really it。 Every single one of their interactions had me dousing my head with buckets of freezing water。 There was no on-page sex in this novel, just so we're clear。 But oh did I wish there was。 "How long have you been there?" I ask。"Not long。 It is late。 Surely you should be sleeping。""I will, but I wished to see you。""Why?"I frown。 "Because I am daft, clearly。"And then this book needed an ending, and I wish it didn't。It was fine。 I can't really point out something what annoyed me or made my enjoyment lessen。 It just did。 The big reveals were over, the romance was consumed and now was the time for some action。And apparently I don't like action??????(can someone tell this bitch that she complained two minutes ago that the book was boring because nothing happened????)As for the two major plot twists, I predicted them after 50 pages, which may seem tragic to some of you, when in fact it did not annoy me too much。The fact that the abbess was Annith’s mother was so blatantly obvious that I don’t know how it could even be considered a plot twist。 There couldn’t be two thousand reasons why the abbess didn’t want to send her out as a handmaiden。 However, the fact that her father was not Mortmain still shocked me and it made for a pretty interesting questioning of faith and beliefs。But anyway, this whole family twist pales in comparison to how EPIC Balthazaar’s reveal was。 I mean, I also predicted it, but in a disbelieving kind of way? If you know what I mean? I was reading and I went “bish, wouldn’t it be so cool if Balthazaar was in fact Mortmain? Such a cool plot-twist, I bet she would never do that。” And then she fucking DID and I SCREAMED。Was it slightly creepy that he had been in love with her since she was a child?。。。yes。Was it a bit disturbing that he is Sybella and Ismae’s dad, which kind of makes Annith their step-mom????。。。also yes。Did I choose to ignore those facts so I could enjoy my steamy romance in peace?。。。YES。This is what we call critical reading people。So this is it for my review of Mortal Heart, the last book in the original His Fair Assassin trilogy。 I will now be leaving Brittany behind to get into french politics and other shenanigans with none other than…sybella????She’s literally my least favorite of the three。 To say I’m disappointed is an understatement。But hey, I already bought Courting Darkness, so that means I’ll have to read it anyway。That’s what we call having a book buying problems, kids。Don’t be like me。I'm out。 。。。more

(hide spoiler)]Another thing I loved about this book was the way it ended。 From the previous books, and from what I understood from Wikipedia, Anne did not have a particularly happy ending。 I'm glad that was worked out, and we got a pretty good ending for her。(view spoiler)[I had read that she was going to end up marrying the King, so I was really glad when they made it a marriage of love。 Somewhat。 At least it wasn't complete a disaster。 (hide spoiler)]I was kinda hoping that Annith would end up sleeping with 'someone' *ahem* and thus become non-eligible for the Seeress task, and I'm glad she considered it, but why isn't there a book like that out there? (On second thoughts, there must most definitely be numerous books out there with that plot, but I've not had the good fortune to come across them)Also, one of my theories about this came true, and not only was it accurate, it was precise (Class 11 physics has drilled these two words together in my head; can't think of one without thinking of the other)。(view spoiler)[This was my actual theory, confessed to Brinley, my reading buddy for this one:67%(view spoiler)[I have this feeling that the abbess might have slept with Crunard or something。。。。。I can't think of a worse offense。。。Is it possible that Annith might be the daughter of the abbess? With Crunard? And not of Mortain at all? That's why she's normal? I think I'm grasping at straws here (hide spoiler)] And then approximately 5 minutes later:68% and 69%(view spoiler)[OH MY GOD I WAS RIGHT!!!!!??!?!?!?!?!?I have never been ever completely right in any of predictions。 I think。 But OH MY GOD I GUESSED CORRECTLY!!??!?!In other thoughts, I feel this makes Annith's devotion to Mortain even more beautiful, and her love for him truer。 (hide spoiler)] I know I get too excited whenever one of my theories is even remotely near what was true, but I can't help it。And, like I said in my update, I really thought that made Annith's love more true。 And Mortain's as well。 Because neither of them were under any obligation to be so devoted, granted Annith wasn't aware, but somehow I just really loved that。Also, it would have been really weird if he was actually her father。 And I usually avoid stories and fanfics that have a romance in which one of them knows the other from birth, or something like that, which usually gives it pedophilia vibes, but in this case, because it was more of a falling in love with the other person's soul, it was okay。 It was really okay。 It was more than really okay。 (Brain: How the mighty have fallen。 Reduced to 'okay'。 Is it even a fall if your vocabulary was this bad to begin with?)(Me: Shut up) (hide spoiler)]Reading this series, I've been made more curious about Celtic gods, and paganism。 I'll definitely be researching more about them, and I hope to read more from this concept。 I think probably the only books I've read till date with Celtic gods is The Hound of Rowan series, and I'd love to read more! I really loved that series。That Author's Note made me want to really read the sequels, and so I'm really excited to read the Courting Darkness series, though I'm sad that we won't have more Annith。 I do like Sybella, though so it's not that much of a bad thing。 I just really hope we'll keep seeing more of Annith!I loved it, and I recommend it to anyone who read the previous two books。 Or even people who might decide to read this as a standalone, though you probably won't understand a lot of what's going on。 。。。more

A kind of weak end to the trilogy bc I feel like Anniths story was interesting but disjointed and could have been done with a lot more fierceness even with the love story attached。 It was weird and I didn't love it but didn't hate it。 The second book was the standout。 A kind of weak end to the trilogy bc I feel like Anniths story was interesting but disjointed and could have been done with a lot more fierceness even with the love story attached。 It was weird and I didn't love it but didn't hate it。 The second book was the standout。 。。。more

A great ending to a great series。Before i read dark triumph i didn't believe i would like it as much as grave mercy, i thought i would miss Ismae and Duval too much, but i didn't, it was just as good。And before reading this one i was worried it wouldn't hold up to the two first books but it definitely does。i love how each book has a distinct voice but they all work really well together。a really great trilogy and really different to any other books i've read。 A great ending to a great series。Before i read dark triumph i didn't believe i would like it as much as grave mercy, i thought i would miss Ismae and Duval too much, but i didn't, it was just as good。And before reading this one i was worried it wouldn't hold up to the two first books but it definitely does。i love how each book has a distinct voice but they all work really well together。a really great trilogy and really different to any other books i've read。 。。。more

Mortal Heart (His Fair Assassin #3) by Robin LaFevers was a good finale。 I'm glad I finally completed the series。 I know it's been a long time coming considering how long ago I read the first installment, but at least I've finally checked it off my tbr。 I particularly appreciated how the author combines some real world history elements with fantasy。 The cast of characters are really what make this so successful。 I'm going to have to try Courting Darkness soon。 Mortal Heart (His Fair Assassin #3) by Robin LaFevers was a good finale。 I'm glad I finally completed the series。 I know it's been a long time coming considering how long ago I read the first installment, but at least I've finally checked it off my tbr。 I particularly appreciated how the author combines some real world history elements with fantasy。 The cast of characters are really what make this so successful。 I'm going to have to try Courting Darkness soon。 。。。more

I liked this book a lot! A lot of reviews say this book is the weakest in the trilogy, and I disagree。 This was my second favorite book out of the trilogy, my favorite being Dark Triumph (duh)。 I wish I could give this book 3 1/2 stars, because that's a more accurate reflection of my opinion。 It wasn't bad by any means, but some of the political scenes and court interactions bored me。 Spoilers ahead in this review! Some thoughts: When I found out that Balthazaar was actually Death, I wasn't able I liked this book a lot! LaFevers has a talent for tossing in several earth-shattering twists in the last few hundred pages of her novels, like in Dark Triump。 I didn't guess that the abbess was Annith's mother, and then learning that Annith wasn't even sired by Mortain threw me for a loop。 I guessed that Crunard was Annith's father, but only a few pages prior to her finding out for herself。 I definitely didn't guess that Balthazaar was anything except for a hellequin, so that was a well-kept secret。 Last but not least, finding out that Father Efram is actually Saint Solonius made my jaw hit the ground。 That was a nice touch, especially because Father Efram posed as such an unassuming character for most of the book。 My favorite parts of the book included Annith's time spent at the convent in the beginning of the novel and of course her time spent riding with the hellequins。 At the convent, I liked meeting the younger novitiates and learning about Annith's inner turmoil; it set the stage for Annith's exciting escape。 The chapters where Annith mingled with the hellequins reminded me of Jon Snow spending time with Wildlings north of the Wall in Game of Thrones。 Like I said, I enjoyed this book! I already bought Courting Darkness and plan on reading it soon。 。。。more

I’m so happy to finish this trilogy at last。 I waited too long to begin it。 I have loved being immersed in the royal courts and dark forests of 1400s Brittany。 The culmination of the nine pagan gods with the assassin daughters of Mortain and the duchess of Brittany created such an intriguing setting。 While I think Sybella and Beast will always be my favorite couple, learning about Annith and Balthazaar as well as seeing more of Ismae and Duval has been a treat。 I can’t wait to read the companion I’m so happy to finish this trilogy at last。 I waited too long to begin it。 I have loved being immersed in the royal courts and dark forests of 1400s Brittany。 The culmination of the nine pagan gods with the assassin daughters of Mortain and the duchess of Brittany created such an intriguing setting。 While I think Sybella and Beast will always be my favorite couple, learning about Annith and Balthazaar as well as seeing more of Ismae and Duval has been a treat。 I can’t wait to read the companion duology! 。。。more

i was so bored。 the whole time。 the characters from book 2 turn out to be the only interesting people in this entire fictional world。

4。5 ⭐️ This is definitely a new favourite series and this was my favourite book within it! If the romance had featured in this book more I would have made it a 5 star。

Of the three HFA books, this was my favourite。 I loved the mystery behind it all and Annith's growth so that she paves her own way。 So many surprises, but a very satisfying ending。 I'm sad to see this trilogy come to an end。 Of the three HFA books, this was my favourite。 I loved the mystery behind it all and Annith's growth so that she paves her own way。 So many surprises, but a very satisfying ending。 I'm sad to see this trilogy come to an end。 。。。more
